Written By: Joseph A. Gillespie Black & White puts players in the shoes of a God, and gives you a handful of digital followers with which you must care for. Utilizing a unique "mouse-only" control scheme, players are able to cast spells (called "Miracles" in Black & White), move around the land, pick up small people/animals/trees, and even build large cities. GamePlay: 7/10 Having the creature learn involves simply waiting for it to do something, and then praising it. Hopefully it will do it again, and you then you praise it again. Repeat this process about 5-10 times and it will figure out a new trick. Sometimes after your creature has simply watched you do something enough it will learn it automatically, but this doesn't happen nearly enough... Overall the creature was a good idea, but it was poorly implemented, and makes the game play rather tedious. Other then that though the game play is awesome. You have the choice of either throwing a flaming comet at your enemies city, or smashing your own city. Why would you want to smash your own city though? Well, you have to ensure that your followers continue to believe in you, and you have two ways of doing that. Either perform "good" miracles and let your people believe they couldn't survive without you. Or, you could smash and kill, and make them believe that they will be wiped off the planet if they don't serve your will. The choice is yours. There are also a lot of "quests" that you can do, such as finding a shepherds lost flock, or collecting wood/food for your followers. Some of these quests are simply for fun, but most of them will grant you with new creatures, or access to different lands. Here's one area of the game that contradicts the text on the back of the box. Each new "land" is basically a new level, that's right, level. There are a limited number of levels, and you can in fact "finish" the game. Each new land brings a new enemy God into your game, giving you a purpose for completing each level. Eventually you come upon the final and ultimate God opponent, who you of course dispose of and take over his land/people as well. Thus completing the final real challenge of the game, and therefore completing the game. Graphics: 9/10 Graphics in this game are top-notch. Each little villager has his/her own look, and facial expressions, the textures are nice & realistic, even the trees swing in the wind. The graphics really shine during boss-battles, few things can inspire the awe of graphics lovers like fighting another God and watching rain, lightning, and flaming comets collide with your precious city. The villagers running everywhere in a panic and no choice but to return the onslaught with even greater force upon your enemy. Black & White also has extremely low hardware requirements. It ran quite smoothly on a very low grade system, with only minimal lag in the most intense sequences. On any modern day computer, I wouldn't imagine any lag at all. Sounds & Music: 9/10 Sound is probably Black & White's best feature. With everything from the swaying of trees, to the hammering/sawing of villagers, to realistic sounding "whizzes" coming from the flaming comets. The planet of Black & White seems almost as if it is actually alive. And the voice acting is top-notch as well. Both on your own Advice giving helpers, and even the actual followers themselves (Though they can become quite repetitive with the constant "We need more wood." and other complaints that seem to have only voice recorded for them). Music is simply there to provide ambiance, and does pick a bit during battles, but is mostly just slight bit of background noise. Overall the sounds department did a very good job. Overall: 7/10 Overall Black & White is one of those games that won't appeal to all players, but those strange few won't be able to get enough of it. While the controls can be sort of non-responsive at times, and the load times are much to long, it plays out rather well. If you look past the small bugs, you'll find good solid game play that will last you a long time. Will you gain the respect of your followers with peace and happiness, or scare the daylights out of them? The choice is yours. Last Modified: August 9th, 2006
