Xbox 360 Review - Dead rising

Dead Rising puts players in a shopping mall filled with over 53,000 zombies, and gives you 3 days to decide what to do. Sound like fun? Well, it is! Dead Rising is by no means your average zombie game. There's no puzzles to solve, no fear to be induced, and certainly no mansions. Instead what Dead Rising offers is a non-stop zombie killing thrill ride. Oh, and um, don't expect to just be running around shooting zombies all day, because there are not actually that many guns in the game. No, instead Capcom gives you a much more realistic take on the situation, and not only allows you, but forces you to think what would I do if I was actually here. And that, of course, is pick up the nearest sharp object and start swinging it around in front of you. Indeed, the main draw to Dead Rising is it's open weapons system. 2x4's, Nailguns, Saw Blades, Trash Cans, Stuffed Bears, Oversized Plastic Lipstick displays, signs, plants, lead pipes, guns, swords, other zombies, and so much more can all be converted into weapons. Oh, and while on the subject of killing zombies, let's not forget there are a LOT of zombies to kill. This isn't a one zombie per room game, at any given time 50, 60, 100, or more zombies can be ON SCREEN, and coming for you! So, let's break it down and see what makes Dead Rising fun, and what it needs to work on.

Graphics: 8/10
Ok, I'll start off acknowledging the fact that judging the graphics for Dead Rising is hard. There are soooo many zombies on screen, that you have to give major props to the graphics. But, when you actually break it down, the models and textures aren't exactly next generation quality. Environments are done superbly.
Lots of different locales to visit, and each one feels unique. Each shop looks like it should, and you never feel like they just duplicated this shop and stuch a different name on the sign. The characters models for the main characters, including the player character, are very well done. The main character is particular is very well designed, and even customizable! Remember, this is a shopping mall, and what do malls have the most of? Clothes stores! So, throughout the game, when visiting these stores, not only can you eliminate the zombies within, but also change you appearance as well. In the common vein of odd humor within Dead Rising, you can actually try on all of the clothes available... including the female and child clothes. I can say that roaming around killing zombies as a cross-dressed male is... different to the zombie genre at best. Wearing the extremely undersized childrens clothing is also a bit... off. Thoguh the fact that you can do these things adds to the whole concept of "Do whatever you want" that Dead Rising tries to portray. Lastly, we have the zombie models. These are by far the worst graphical aspect of the game. Now, please don't get me wrong, they are NOT ugly or bad by a long shot. But, in comparison to other Xbox 360 titles, these models look more like what you found on the Xbox. However, this is generally not a big issue. The standard camera angle for Dead Rising is pulled back and up quite a bit, which makes the models look just fine. It's only really noticeable when taking a picture of the zombies how the textures tend to stretch and the models are often reused many times. This is a give and take though, massive amounts of zombies on screen plus amazing graphics just aren't capable yet.

Story: 9/10
In classic Capcom fashion, Dead Rising has a very interesting storyline. The basis is that Frank (a photo journalist) gets a tip about a small town in Colorado that for some reason has been completely sealed off by the National Gaurd. So, like any good member of the press, you go to figure out what's going on there. Upon arrival, it's made instantly clear that something weird is going on in this small town, and things aren't business as usual at all. After your helicopter transport becomes targeted by the Guard, you take a leap out of it and land on the shopping mall roof. From there, you enter the mall and the problems begin. Frank discovers that Homeland Security is operating inside the mall, apparently unaffected by the zombies, and determined to locate and export an old man also inside the mall. This simple basis unravels throughout the game to reveal what's really going on here.

Gameplay: 9/10
Dead Rising offers everything, both a solid long term gameplay aspect, and a perfect "Pick and Play" aspect. You can do it either way, and love it. The basic gameplay is of course, kill the zombies. That alone can provide hours of enjoyment. Ok, then we add another layer, take pictures. Frank (the lead character) is a photo-journalist, and that is actually how he got in this situation in the first place. So, throughout the game you can at anytime snap a picture of what is going on. Better pictures give you more "PP" or "Prestige Points". Get enough PP and you level up, which adds more health blocks, unlocks special moves, allows Frank to carry more items, and other extremely useful upgrades. Now we add another layer, saving survivors. Find some one who isn't chewing off his own thumb, and you can take them back to safety. Some survivors have certain missions attached to them as well. Finally, we have the main story. Folllow the windy path to the truth, and discover just what is going on around here. All of this can be done, or not done, in whatever manner you choose. Dead Rising brings some very unique things to the table in terms of gameplay as well. For one thing, in order to make it as open as possible, you can save your current status and restart the game at any time. So, say you just go around beating on zombies for 2 days. Now you want to try the story, save, restart, and all of your stats that you built up will be available right from the beginning.

Dead Rising features a very present and very twisted sense of humor throughout the entire game. Beyond the clothes aspect mentioned above, some zombies will attack in some sexual innuendo ways, certain items can be used to make the zombies more fun (such as putting road cones on their heads), and more such antics can be found all through the game. Many objects, such as hanger, cones, buckets, etc can be used to neutralize zombies, as well as make them look hilarious. For example, sticking a road cone on there head makes them wonder around lost, unable to bit, and with a bright orange cone for a head. You can also take the bits of flesh they are eating, such as an arm, and shove it down their throat, making them run around choking and again unable to bite you. There's also this weird thing with bees, but I will let you figure it out.

Not everything in Dead Rising is perfect though. The worst problems are with the aiming system. When taking a picture, or aiming a gun, you are completely stationary, and unable to move. With 50+ zombies coming at you, it would be helpful to be able to shoot and run at the same time. You can fire the guns without going into aim mode, however you're miss more often then not, and if you do hit something it'll never be a head shot. Dead Rising also suffers from frequent lockups. Many times while playing Dead Rising the game would suddenly stop and my Xbox 360 would display a "Disk Unreadable" error. Restarting the console always solved the problem, but it also meant I had to return to my last save. Which is another issue Dead Rising suffers from. There is no auto-save, and the save points are spread extremely thin. With the massive number of zombies, you will die a lot. With very few save points, having to reload can be extremely frustrating. You are also allowed only one save file per profile. I'm not going to note this as a negative really though, as it makes the game more challenging and causes you to really thing before you save. However, I do think it's worth noting, as it's quite easy to end up in a situation where your current save puts you in a position of being unable to complete the story, and you must then restart the whole game.

Dead Rising does not support any multiplayer options, which is sad because having some friends with you in the mall would be extremely entertaining. Even just split screen multiplayer could be massively enjoyable, with you and 3 friends against 50,000+ zombies in a zombie bash-a-thon. Perhaps in the sequel this feature will be added.

Sounds & Music: 9/10
Sounds are great, and there are lots of them. Zombie moaning, weapon noises, item noises, voice acting, all of it is great. Music is for the most part non-existant though. When entering certains stores that play music, it is present, and during boss battles there is background music as well. During sone boss battles there are actual songs being played in the background from popular artists. I personally like to play the songs on my hard drive while playing Dead Rising. Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit is a personal favorite while playing Dead Rising. As well as Destroy All by Static-X, and Bodies by Drowning Pool.
One particularly nice aspect of the sounds in Dead Rising is they all sound unique. Each gun has it's own firing sound, each weapon it's own impact sound. A 2x4 and a baseball bat, both being wooden objects with roughly the same impact manner, could easily have used the same sound. But, they don't. This helps to establish the realism of the game, and the fact that you are using a baseball bat, and not just an object copy or some other weapon with a different model.

Overall: 9/10
Dead Rising is an excellent game, and should certainly be added to any Xbox 360 owner's collection. Dead Rising is extremely violent and bloody, and does contain some very mild sexuality, so it's certainly not a kids game. However, it does wrap all of that up in a dramatically over the top way that makes many areas actually funny, and let's not forget how incredibly polished and enjoyable the game is. If you're looking for a game you can just pick up at any time and goe nuts, this is it. If you're looking for a game with a solid storyline and good pacing, this is also it. However you look at it, Dead Rising has something to offer to almost everyone.
