AI Built Into Search Engines?
Written By: Joseph Gillespie

When you think about a search engine, you probably think "Google". In fact, the word Google was recently added to the Webster Dictionary with a meaning of "to search for information on the Internet". When you think about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) you consider how Google, and other search engines function. Keywords density, placement, phrases, etc, etc. But in a few years, that could all be different.

Enter a world with AI-infused search engines running the show. These new search engines are being developed to actually read and UNDERSTAND the text found on your websites, not just try to match up specific words. By actually understanding the English language, Search Engines of Tomorrow would be able to allow you to perform "natural language" searches in a far superior way to to even Google. Some AI enthusiasts even proclaim that in time you could actually speak to the search engine, rather than the website you are looking for. Rather than searching Google for, "free billing software program shareware" you would simply type in "Find free billing software" - this of course is just a simple example of what could be.

"This is the beginning for the Web being at work for you in a smart way, and taking on the tedious tasks for you," said Alain Rappaport, CEO and founder of Medstory. (a search engine for medical information) "The Web and the amount of information is growing at such a pace that it's an imperative to build an intelligent system that leverages knowledge and exploits it efficiently for people" he added. "Search engines try to train us to become good keyword searchers. We dumb down our intelligence so it will be natural for the computer," said Barney Pell (Powerset) "The big shift that will happen in society is that instead of moving human expressions and interactions into what's easy for the computer, we'll move computers' abilities to handle expressions that are natural for the human" he said.

Building a search engine that makes the computer able to handle more human natural input could provide a breakthrough for even more technology. For quite some time now, computers have had their own way of doing things, and humans just had to adapt. But in the coming years, that could all be reversed. However, let's just stick to the search engines for this article, the possibilities are already making my head hurt.

So, the question now is, what happens to SEO when these "smart" search engines become popular? Well, in my eyes, it would all become a lot simpler. For one thing, there wouldn't be anymore concern of "keyword stuffing" or many of the popular shady SEO tricks. Thus, we all get a much more equal slice of the search engine traffic pie. By simply writing out your site properly you'd automatically be heavily optimized! Another possible change in the way the search engines would function, is by not even requiring that you search for keywords that are even on the page you may be looking for!

Imagine that you were to simply search in something like "big news event yesterday" - and the search engine was able to understand all of the news sites and find the story you were looking for. This type of concept would make SEO even easier, as the keywords wouldn't even matter as much as the content.

Ok, so Search Engines are going to get smarter, but what about
our other favorite type of internet search, image search? Google Image Search is extremely popular, and extremely efficient for the time being. But, an upstart image search company called Riya is hoping to redefine that field as well. Imagine this, you see a pretty bird sitting on a branch in your yard. Not the normal type of bird for your yard, so you take a picture. Now you want to now what type of bird exactly it was. In todays world, you go to Google Image Search, type in some various colors and the bird, and sift through hundreds of pages until you find one that looks the same. Not overly complex, and it gets the job done... But imagine tomorrow's world, as envisioned by Riya. In our same example, you would simply upload your image and tell the Riya search to find more images that have the bird in it. The Riya search engine looks at the photo, looks at all the photos on the internet, and returns the best results. Bam, in a few seconds you've got a match and no manual drudging through images required. The exact same example could be used for finding furniture, houses, trees, insects, all sorts of things!

So, in closing, the smart search engines make searching easier, they make getting found easier, and could even open up the technology for whole new sectors of the internet, or computer world, to improve. Hopefully we'll see the first launches this year.
