Wii to cost $250 & Launch November 19th, 2006
Written By: Joseph Gillespie
The Nintendo Wii has been a hot topic among gamers for months, and finally we have the answers we've all been craving. When will it launch, how many launch titles, and what's the price. Well, here are the answers.
- The Wii will launch in Japan on December 2nd, 2006. US Launch will be November 19th, 2006.
- The Wii will have 25 launch titles.
- The Wii will cost... 25,000 yen in Japan, and $250 in the US.
Nintendo plans to ship nearly 4 million Wii's by the end of the year, worldwide. That's almost double the number of PS3's that will be available in the same time frame. First party Wii games will cost $50, and there should be 30 games available by the end of the year. The Wii will also feature something Nintendo has not done since the SNES, include one free game with every console! The Wii Sports compilation that was shown off at E3 earlier this year will be included with every Wii sold. This offers Wii gamers such games as baseball, bowling, golf, and tennis right out of the box.
The Wii will include the follow right out of the box: Console, Wii remote with strap, Nunchuck attachment, AC adaptor, A/V cable, console stand, sensor bar, sensor bar stand, and two AA batteries. If purchased seperately the accessories will cost: Wii remote: 3,800 Yen (US $32), Classic controller: 1,800 Yen (US $15), Nunchuck attachment: 1,800 Yen (US $15).
In an interview with New York Times Magazine, Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aime said, "Our goal is to bring gaming back to the masses. You see that in our pricing, you see that in the number of units we plan to make available this year and you see that in how we are positioning the Wii to appeal to every member of the household, including but not limited to the hardcore gamer."
The highly anticipated Zelda: Twilight Princess will be available by the end of year, as will Excite Truck. However, it appears that the first Mario title will not be available until early 2007. The Wii will also feature web browsing capabilities similar to that of a true PC. "Perhaps most intriguing, the Wii will make it possible to browse the Web on the television," said the Times report. "Microsoft's Xbox 360 does not permit this because that could negate the need to buy a Windows PC."
The Wii will also be the first time Nintendo has broken away from it's "Game consoles are for games only" concept. In addition to the DVD Playback feature, the Wii will feature many multimedia functions as well. The Wii will function news & weather channels, as well as the ability to store and display pictures. "We are including all of these capabilities as part of our overall strategy to expand the gaming market," Fils-Aime told the Times. "Broadening the market is important because it will breathe new life into this business. Otherwise, this industry is moving down a path of being more and more limited to the hardcore gamer."
Some truly exciting new information, the Wii is sure to be a popular console in the Next Generation. With all of these advances, it could easily mean the return on Nintendo to their throne.
