Pink PlayStation 2 - To debut at Leipzig Convention

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the expansion of the PlayStation 2 line-up in Europe with the introduction of a new colour. The new, limited edition Pink PlayStation 2 will be available from selected retailers throughout Europe after the 8th of November 2006. It will come complete with two Pink Analog Controllers (DUALSHOCK 2) and a Pink Memory Card (8MB). With the success of the Xbox 360 Faceplate system, and the Nintendo Wii announced to be available in over five different colors, it's obvious Sony will have to start keeping up with the ever evolving "designer" aspect of console gaming. There's currently no word on whether the PlayStation 3 will feature any further colors than the already announced Black and Silver options.
Sony has stated that the decision to produce a Pink PlayStation 2 stems from the increasingly widespread appeal of PlayStation 2, through the popularity of socially interactive games such as BUZZ and SingStar. Also that the Pink console reflects the growing and diverse demographic that PlayStation 2 has developed.
"PlayStation 2 is the accessible, affordable way to enjoy new social, communal and interactive entertainment experiences, through software titles like SingStar, Buzz and EyeToy", said Dan Hill, PlayStation 2 European Brand Manager. "The Pink PlayStation 2 is funky, fresh, and fashionable, and will further broaden the console’s continuing popularity and relevance with a fun new twist".
The new Pink PlayStation 2 will make its debut European appearance on the Sony Computer Entertainment Stand at the Leipzig Convention, happening on the 23rd through 27th of August 2006. One can only wonder though why Sony is putting such time and effort into marketing the aging PlayStation 2, and not the PlayStation 3. Will we see new annoucments in the coming weeks about further PlayStation 3 color availability? Or this is just a desperate attempt by Sony to keep it's head above water? Since its European launch in November 2000, sales of the PlayStation 2 console to consumers in the SCEE territories have reached almost 40 million units. Recommended retail price for the Pink PlayStation 2 is currently set at €159.99 and £129.99 in UK (bundled with SingStar Pop). No other areas (America, Japan, etc) are currently scheduled to receive any shipments of the new Pink PlayStation 2.
