Wal-Mart Begins Spamming?
Written By: Joseph Gillespie

The retail industry mega giant, Wal-Mart, has apparently entered the spam game. Unconfirmed reports have come in stating that email addresses never used for any type of Wal-Mart activity have suddenly started to receive "Wal-Mart Wire" emails. If true, this would indicate Wal-Mart has begun an unsolicited/spam email advertising scheme.

Wal-Mart emails, including those apparently received as spam, are supposedly part of the Habeas program. Habeas is an "email trust authority" that tries to combat spam and unsolicited emails by ensuring only valid and authorized emails are sent to customers of the companies they work with. In one incident involving the Wal-Mart Wire spam claim, the recipient of the email claims to have reported the email as spam to Habeas, only to receive another unsolicited email from Wal-Mart the next day. This leads one to wonder if Wal-Mart may be in some way obtaining an authorized status rather than earning it.

In today's busy internet world, spam accounts for almost 90% of all email sent. A staggering number at best. Many tools and companies has sprung up to combat spam, and around $3.5 billion is spent dealing with spam a year.

Most large companies, including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc will automatically add customers to their mailing list when a purchase is made or email information is provided (such as filling out online order forms, or contact forms, etc). However, if the reports about Wal-Mart are found to be accurate, than the retail giant has begun sending emails to people who may have never even purchased an item from Wal-Mart. Completely unsolicited email advertising.

Accusations have also been made that Wal-Mart may be purchasing lists of emails addresses in order to send emails to, however these claims are not verified at this time. If you have received an unsolicited email from Wal-Mart, please let us know. We are currently investigating this topic, and will update this article as more information is available.
